Wounded Warrior Adapted Surfboards

Volunteer project in collaboration with Mencel Surfboards and my coworkers to create and design four accessible surfboards to teach Wounded Warriors and diabled individuals how to surf through Operation Beachhead.

In the summer of 2022, I had the opportunity to be part of a project dedicated to making surfing more accessible for Wounded Warriors and others. We built 10’6” & 9’6” adaptive EPS/Epoxy surf sleds, specifically designed to accommodate the needs of veterans and other disabled individuals looking to get back in the water.

I volunteered my time throughout the entire process, taking on key roles in hotcoating, glassing, airbrushing, and creating the white pattern through an additional hotcoat. I also worked on glossing, sanding, and installing the handles, ensuring the boards were not only functional but also durable and visually striking. Each step required precision and care, as these boards needed to provide stability and support for adaptive surfers while maintaining high performance in the water.

This project was more than just shaping and building—it was about giving back to a community that has given so much. Seeing these boards come to life and knowing they would help veterans experience the ocean in a new way was an incredibly rewarding experience. It reinforced my appreciation for craftsmanship, collaboration, and the power of surf culture to bring people together. Here are some pics of the finished products, a before picture of the blanks obnoxiously sticking out of my old Jeep Cherokee, and the board in use through Operation Beachhead. This project also lead to my Sustainable Surfboard project listed in this portfolio.
